Canon Mates

STEVE ROGERS
TEAM: GREEN
FILE: CDC FILE
AFFILIATION: Canonmate | Teammate
RELATIONSHIP: Friend | Ally

COMMENTARY

Started out interesting, partly because Tony had to save Steve from a wild animal made out of precipitation, but also from finding out they're from different canon points. Tony started out with Steve still at an arm's length, still associating him with the symbol that his dad never shut up about. He was very insistent about not showing any weakness around him, or opening up too much. But being in the CDC and going through Ajna together has significantly changed their relationship. They still fight and get on each other's nerves, but when they come together, they team up seamlessly. And Tony has grown to trust Steve a lot more.

BUCKY BARNES
TEAM: RED
FILE: CDC FILE
AFFILIATION: Canonmate
RELATIONSHIP: Friend

COMMENTARY

Their relationship started out being primarily based on Tony as the go-to guy for repairing Bucky's metal arm, as well as functioning as Steve's back-up in the event that Bucky loses his shit, which has happened and it's had collateral damage. There have also been times that Bucky has asked for Tony's help without Steve's participation, and gave him butterfly poison as a gift (making up for the fact that he broke his suit, but a gift nevertheless). Tony doesn't understand Bucky sometimes, but he still talks to him like everybody else, refusing to walk on eggshells around him because after everything Bucky's went through, he feels that's not what he needs. Tony has also grown to like Bucky and consider him a friend. Enough to be devastated when he thought he was dead.

CLINT BARTON
TEAM: RED
FILE: CDC FILE
AFFILIATION: Canonmate
RELATIONSHIP: Friend | Ally

COMMENTARY

Their canon interaction wasn't exactly rich to begin with. Clint was mind-controlled three-fourths of the movie, and then exchanged four, maybe five sentences with Tony in the heat of fighting aliens. This version of Clint also arrived at a point when two had already passed through the CDC, not to mention the losses of Thor, Natasha, and Bruce. It was weird when yet another version of Hawkeye popped out of the wood works, but he’s grown on Tony. He drunk-dragged Clint along for a prank on Isha, fixed his hearing aids, and has gotten to know his sense of humor and his dependability. Though he hasn't had as many heart-to-hearts with Clint as he’s had with Steve by now, Clint also doesn't ruffle as easily as Steve.

NATASHA ROMANOFF
TEAM: RED
FILE: CDC FILE
AFFILIATION: Canonmate
RELATIONSHIP: Friend/Ally

COMMENTARY

The most recent addition to the recruited Avengers team--technically speaking, considering she had been there before and was reassigned alongside Bruce Banner. Now she's returned, though none of them are sure what the CDC's motives are, or why she doesn't remember anything about Ajna (Tony is also a little disappointed that she can't tell him anything about Bruce). Nevertheless, they're all happy to see her, Tony included. He trusts Natasha a lot more than he did when he first found out she was a SHIELD agent. Even when Peter Parker warns them that the Black Widow from his universe betrayed them all (and tried to marry his version of Tony Stark).

Non-MCU-But-Still-Marvels

LOKI LAUFEYSON
TEAM: RED
FILE: CDC FILE
AFFILIATION: Other
RELATIONSHIP: It's a mystery

COMMENTARY

He's a little disturbed that there’s a parallel universe somewhere that Loki looks like a Teen Choice Award host. But Tony also understands this is not the same Loki that he met on earth, so it’s kind of hard to direct the same anger at him. That would be like an indoor cat hissing at another cat that’s sitting outside, has no means of getting in the house, and doesn't give a shit about anything. It's just being a cat, casually existing in the first cat's general proximity. And sure the first cat is acting on instinct, but Tony is a human with higher reasoning and that’s why he's not puffing his tail and hissing at Loki. This Loki had nothing to do with Manhattan, and hasn't done anything crazy in the CDC, either. It's kind of hard to hold him accountable for something he hasn't done, yet. But Tony doesn't trust him one-hundred percent, either. He's keeping his expectations low.

NOH-VARR
TEAM: ORANGE
FILE: CDC FILE
AFFILIATION: Other
RELATIONSHIP: Ally

COMMENTARY

One of the first members of the "knows another Tony Stark" club that Tony encountered in the CDC. Another kind of humanoid alien that isn't Asgardian, and a highly-gifted genius. Most of their interaction has centered around missions or working on different projects. Tony also deferred to Noh-Varr's alien knowledge when he asked him about the Chitauri and the Tesseract (so now he knows about Thanos, as well). Tony respects his technological ability, how level-headed he's presented himself in the past, and his taste in music.

PETER PARKER
TEAM: RED
FILE: CDC FILE
AFFILIATION: OTHER
RELATIONSHIP: UNCERTAIN

COMMENTARY

Peter has only revealed so much to Tony about his background and the Marvel universe he comes from, which has made things awkward on both ends. The Avengers in Peter's universe have been a thing much longer than in Tony's world, which means there's a lot more going on with them. At this point in time, Tony thinks Peter was pushed into being a superhero because of his genetic enhancement. He knows his father was a scientist, much like Howard, but Peter had a very different dynamic with him. He sees Peter being capable and having his head in the right place, but he's also self-conscious and high-strung (you know, a teenage boy). Basically they get along when Tony isn't messing with him.

ERIK LEHNSHERR
TEAM: RED
FILE: CDC FILE
AFFILIATION: Other
RELATIONSHIP: Uncertain

COMMENTARY

On one hand, Erik has expressed an unsettling fascination with his arc reactor/the shards that it keeps in check, and when he's not being creepy, he's being a stubborn and straightforward ass. On the other hand, Tony doesn't have any reason to hate Erik or peg him as a threat (not right now, anyway). He hasn't done anything. Tony knows better than to pick a fight with someone that could move the metal inside his body until he has a means to protect himself against his ability. And they have had a few casual conversations and a couple instances where Erik helped Tony out. This CR is a big question mark in the middle of a "could go either way" field.

BILLY KAPLAN
TEAM: GREEN
FILE: CDC FILE
AFFILIATION: Team mate
RELATIONSHIP: Undetermined

COMMENTARY

An actual care bear that has been recruited into the team of pint-sized Avengers that apparently exists and Tony can't escape. The most important thing that has come of their interaction so far is Tony finding out about the Hero Registration Act and his alternate's participation in it. Kind of a spaz, but a good kid.

(616) STEVE ROGERS
TEAM: GREEN
FILE: CDC FILE
AFFILIATION: Team mate
RELATIONSHIP: Friend/Ally

COMMENTARY

Steve and Steve--like patriotic bookends. So far, he has a lot in common with the Steve Rogers from Tony's universe. Same wet carrot tendencies, strength of character, discipline, and preoccupation with justice. A very strange dynamic for Tony to deal with after being forced to deal with the CDC's rules for so long. Then again, he also got off to a rocky start with the other Steve. They might be different people, but Tony feels he can trust this Steve as a fellow Avenger, like he trusts the other Steve.

Cross-Canon CR

MIKASA ACKERMAN
TEAM: GREEN
FILE: CDC FILE
AFFILIATION: Team mate
RELATIONSHIP: Ally

COMMENTARY

Leader of the unit that Tony had once been assigned to. During that time, Mikasa was consistent about checking up on him and getting updates on Tony's missions. He resisted her concern, but the fact that she wasn't patronizing or disrespectful made it tolerable. He even opened up about his feelings of conflict about cooperating with the CDC and keeping his own planet, safe. Since then, he's been reassigned to a different team, but Tony still sees Mikasa as very capable, if not existing on a Liam Neeson level of serious.

ELENA GILBERT
TEAM: GREEN
FILE: CDC FILE
AFFILIATION: Team mate
RELATIONSHIP: Ally

COMMENTARY

During the Neraki ambush, Elena was incapacitated by alien blood, and Tony was kidnapped trying to defend her. Then Elena rescued him from his basket before it burned down with him inside it. And then they were assigned to the same unit. Trust was a given, but he also found she has a sense of humor and a moral compass that he can relate to. She's compassionate and she can laugh at herself. And she doesn't get offended when he calls her Count Chocula.

JACK BENJAMIN
TEAM: RED
FILE: CDC FILE
AFFILIATION: Other
RELATIONSHIP: Friend | Source of Misplaced & Confusing Paternal Instincts

COMMENTARY

Tony met Jack the very first day he dropped, and bonded over a mutual appreciation for alcohol and pressed sandwiches. And Tony sees more of himself in Jack than he's probably comfortable with. A boozy (fashionable) playboy with a sharp tongue and a broken relationship with his father and his father's legacy. Once the self-destructive streak reared its head, Tony went to beat some sense into him. Partly because he has grown attached to Jack and fears losing more people, but also because he doesn't want Jack to destroy himself like he almost did. Maybe paying forward what Yinsen did for him in Afghanistan in his own sloppy, failed way. He offered Jack a place in his home if getting released from the CDC is a thing that actually happens.

PARKER ADDISON
TEAM: ORANGE
FILE: CDC FILE
AFFILIATION: Team Mate
RELATIONSHIP: Other

COMMENTARY

The orange exchange student in Tony's unit. No-nonsense and very angry--also hates superheroes. So it shouldn't be surprising at all that these two clash and don't get along very well. They have had a few conversations where they see eye-to-eye about the CDC and its practices, and would agree if they trusted each other to share more. Then it gets frosty again when Parker's defenses go up or Tony decides to crack his jokes...as he constantly does.

HANNA TALBOT
TEAM: GREEN
FILE: CDC FILE
AFFILIATION: Teammate
RELATIONSHIP: Friend | Ally

COMMENTARY

Had Tony at the first reference to an eighties band and their conversation about tramp stamps. Tony likes Hanna because she doesn't take his shit, and can be just as sarcastic right back. Tony is all about that wit, but he's also a closet humanitarian that can't get down with people that are cruel and flippant about human life. Hanna is none of those things: she has a soul. He might have flirted with her if he wasn't still committed to Pepper back on earth, but he cares about Hanna platonically, as well. She told him about her situation in her world, how mutants are put in coliseums and forced to fight one another to death as spectator sport, and he’s invited her to come live on earth so she doesn't have to go back to that and most likely be killed. He got her a Led Zeppelin hoodie.

ISHA DEVAN
TEAM: ORANGE
FILE: CDC FILE
AFFILIATION: Other
RELATIONSHIP: Other

COMMENTARY

Isha is intelligent and highly skilled in technology, and she isn't humble about that, either. Geniuses that Tony can talk to without having to stop and explain what a microchip is don't just fall out of the sky. He also tends to gravitate towards people that don't take his shit, which Isha doesn't, given the multiple times that she’s called him basic. He’s not cool with her being a hacker and a thief, but at the same time, she's one of few people that he's verbally acknowledged as capable. And obviously Tony is not a pristine figure of morality himself (the fact that he's still technically blowing shit up after shutting down his weapons factory is something to discuss). Their dynamic is very much dysfunctional siblings that fight nonstop but won't let anyone else insult the other.

D'ARTAGNAN
TEAM: GREEN
FILE: CDC FILE
AFFILIATION: Team mate
RELATIONSHIP: Friend

COMMENTARY

He does not like files.

GARRUS VAKARIAN
TEAM: GREEN
FILE: CDC FILE
AFFILIATION: Teammate
RELATIONSHIP: Friend | Ally

COMMENTARY

Tony can appreciate someone that knows what he's doing, which obviously Garrus does, and he can carry on a conversation about technology without asking basic questions (and there are plenty of culture-shock characters from earlier time periods where things like cars and movies and germs are unheard of). He can reason things out when it comes to the CDC and what might be going on behind the scenes. And he has a sense of humor that shows up from time to time. He also made sure that people didn't stack boxes on Tony's unconscious body when he was in medical stasis, which Tony appreciates.

Wanted to touch the arc reactor and offered to let Tony "touch his" in return. That is sexual harassment, and Tony doesn't need to take it.
